This fun and inventive adaptation of the Brothers Grimm classic ‘The Fisherman and his Wife’ proved a real hit with the youngsters. Narrators and puppeteers Alex Hykel and Cori Bona guided the audience through a magical tale involving a talking fish that grants wishes and a fisherman’s wife who gets carried away with her greed. From the charming musical intro of ukulele and harmonica to the life-like movements of the puppets, children remained captivated with gasps and giggles to be heard throughout. Set in the relaxed and intimate atmosphere of The Brewery, delighted children were able to get up-close with the puppets and get involved with singing along and pantomime-esque ‘he’s behind you!’

The puppets were carefully operated by Alex and Cori, camouflaged in black against the dark background. Although the clever lighting allowed them to be shadowed behind the puppets, I found it difficult to separate them from their characters, but children were clearly convinced by the performance and unbothered by the presence of the narrators. Quirky touches such as a sea of bubbles announcing the arrival of the magic fish and an interview with the fishwife with audience participation ensured the full attention of all. This charming co-production by LITTLE RAY’S and Puppets and Pandemonium teaches children the important lesson of be careful what you wish for!
